Since 2016 NGBG has run a yearly street festival on Norra Grängesbergsgatan in Malmö, Sweden, their most recent event had 24 stages featuring and attracted 14 500 visitors. They also run pop-up concerts, flash mobs, art exhibitions, a bicycle parade and a virtual recreation of the neighbourhood on a Minecraft server.

Unfortunately, Covid-19 restrictions made it impossible for the festival to be held this year, so instead they have concentrated on their long term goals. NGBG have campaigned successfully for new zoning laws that will enable culture and craftsmanship to thrive and for the area to develop organically, sustainably and inclusively whilst restricting property speculation and residential construction.

They will sign contracts for their new venue in October and the venue – a 200 year old park and farmhouse that has long been hidden behind factory walls – will open in 2022.

What makes the organisation unique?

Whereas culture is often used as a temporary solution as old industrial landscapes are transformed into residential areas, NGBG is working towards a long term cooperation between manufacturing, education, sport, bespoke services and culture to create a new vision for an inner city that is not based on consumption and mass production.
